Waterscope: The River through a Red Cup My seven year old daughter arrived home from a field trip with a plastic-wrapped red cup that she called a waterscope. I was not prepared to be impressed. But after spending time with her peering through this inexpensive lens, I’ve changed my mind. I’m drawn to this imperfectly rendered world of blurs, bubbles, and abstract colors that opens up in the shallows of the Shenandoah River. I love the idea that the ubiquitous red party cup, icon of disposable culture, can become a portal to something quite different.
